REVIEW:
Defend the Dawn is the second book in Brigid Kemmerer’s Defy the Night trilogy, and like the first book, is a young adult fantasy with some romance sprinkled in! This second book continues to follow outlaw Tessa Cade as she attempts to eliminate the plague from her land. Defend the Dawn continues to explore the themes brought up in the first book such as forgiveness, love, and the thin line between right and wrong.
If there’s one phrase that perfectly fits this book, it’s this one: the plot thickens. This perfectly describes pretty much every aspect of Defend the Dawn. I had an absolute blast reading this book, and I honestly wish I could read it again for the first time. This book picks up directly after the end of the last book, and continues the same story. I loved seeing how everything progressed, especially the characters’ relationships. I particularly liked seeing the romance progress, and I loved how they were still interacting with each other throughout the book, whereas in some other books not to be mentioned here, the couple will not talk to each other hardly at all the whole time. That’s something that really annoys me in sequels so I was very grateful this book was not the same!
WARNINGS:
Romance // Blood // Descriptive injuries
TAKEAWAYS:
My takeaways from this book were few and simple: it’s not easy to forgive but it’s worth it, and right and wrong isn’t always as simple as black and white.
