REVIEW:
I've heard people either love this book or hate it. In my opinion, this book falls short.
This book is clean and could have been a really great way for younger kids to get into fantasy, but unfortunately the writing fell completely flat.
It takes place in the Lost Cities, where the elves live, which is hidden from the human world. Sophie Foster, who can read minds, finds out she is an elf and gets swept away to the Lost Cities where everyone has a different ability. It’s a pretty basic concept, but it could have been a fun book if done correctly.
Sophie, who throughout the book just gets carried along in her new school while finding out secrets of the elf world, is virtually unlikeable and way too perfect.
Plenty of young readers have become obsessed with this series, but personally I would hope for kids to read something with more value to turn them into wise readers and better writers.
WARNINGS:
Mild violence // Mild romance // Kidnapping
TAKEAWAYS:
I read this book when I was much younger, and I did enjoy it then, however now I really regret it. I remember getting so caught up in the snappy romance lines that I didn’t really care about how well-written it was, a trap many can fall into. This series, in my opinion, is best avoided.
Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has a secret. She’s a Telepath—someone who hears the thoughts of everyone around her. It’s a talent she’s never known how to explain.
Everything changes the day she meets Fitz, a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and also reads minds. She discovers there’s a place she does belong, and that staying with her family will place her in grave danger. In the blink of an eye, Sophie is forced to leave behind everything and start a new life in a place that is vastly different from anything she has ever known.
Sophie has new rules to learn and new skills to master, and not everyone is thrilled that she has come “home.”
There are secrets buried deep in Sophie’s memory—secrets about who she really is and why she was hidden among humans—that other people desperately want. Would even kill for.
In this page-turning debut, Shannon Messenger creates a riveting story where one girl must figure out why she is the key to her brand-new world, before the wrong person finds the answer first.
Shannon Messenger graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts where she learned—among other things—that she liked watching movies much better than making them. She’s studied art, screenwriting, and television production, but realized her real passion was writing for kids and teens. She’s the internationally, New York Times, and USA Today bestselling author of the award-winning middle grade series, Keeper of the Lost Cities, as well as the Sky Fall young adult series. Her books have been featured on multiple state reading lists, published in numerous countries, and translated into many languages. She lives in Southern California with her family and an embarrassing number of cats.
