REVIEW:

Wow. You guys, this book really impressed me actually! When I picked it up I was looking forward to it because it seemed like everything I usually enjoy reading about (Fairy tale retelling meets thriller ghost story with romance and ocean vibes. . . Who wouldn’t be excited to read such a thing?!) but for some reason I didn’t think I’d love it.

But I was so wrong. This book is amazing!! I definitely highly recommend it! Some of my favorite things about this book were the relationships the characters had. I was expecting our main character to be in a situation where everyone in her family is horrible and she’s painted as the only smart person there, but I was so pleasantly surprised when that wasn’t the case. I loved our main character so much, and I loved how she cared for her family so much.

This book does have some warnings though, so here they are. This is a fairy tale retelling, yes, but it isn’t your classic Disney princess happily ever after story. This book is actually classified as a fantasy-thriller, which makes good sense. This story has some dark elements.

The whole premise of the book is that people are dying. And they do die. Most of the deaths aren’t described a whole lot, only enough for us to know that they were not normal deaths. Later in the book though, a girl begins to claim to see ghosts, and the descriptions of the ghosts get more graphic and descriptive.

This is not a Christian book, so there are no faith elements. There are gods in this world however, and some of them are evil. One god has a baby with a mortal.

WARNINGS:

Dark Elements // Death // Talk of other gods

TAKEAWAYS:

The people you love are worth fighting for. Doing the right thing sometimes means turning away from something everyone else is doing.

The Blurb

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls' lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last—the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge—and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who—or what—are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.
