I recently had the privilege of meeting an author, Candace Kade, at a writing retreat I went to. I bought her book and quickly inhaled it. I was absolutely enthralled and knew I had found a new favorite genre. Enhanced and its sequel Hybrid hit differently. A YA futuristic sci-fi novel where your DNA determines your worth. People have figured out how to enhance human life in new and spectacular ways, but when an orphan girl, whose parents gave her no enhancements, is adopted, she has to fit into a society where she does not belong and all the while not let her secret out. With fast paced prose and thrilling action scenes Candace creates a magnificent story of found family and powerful themes that had me on the edge of my seat reading late into the night from page one.
Also, one of my good friends recently released a YA Superhero novella all on her own that has similar aspects to those mentioned above. Vanessa Scott's Agents of Wrath is a fascinating story with a unique plot, deep characters, intriguing world building, suspenseful dialogue and aptitudes for superpowers. Vanessa never fails to amaze me with her incredible writing skills. To paraphrase what my sister said, you can usually tell the writer is young and needs some more work to clean some of the messiness up, but not so with Vanessa .
