Insights from Classics: Little Women

Quote:

“I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my own ship.” - Jo March, Little Woman.

Context:

I really love this quote. It holds such deep biblical truth that I think we can really hold onto. Life comes with so many storms and hardships. But God uses those storms to teach us and sharpen us for the battle ahead.

With God, we do not need to fear the storms; instead, we can approach them with the confidence that we are learning to navigate our ships. If we look at the storms of life as a gift from God, think about how much easier the storms will be! But how do we not fear the storms of life? How do we look at the next season of our life without fear? How do you not fear when you don’t even know what’s next?  It seems so easy to say, but to actually do, is a whole other thing.

You know, when I first came across that quote from Jo March, it really struck me. I mean, who hasn’t felt like they’re stuck in a storm at some point? Whether it’s just dealing with stress, friendship drama, or just the ups and downs of everyday, life can feel pretty overwhelming. What if we could flip the script and see those storms as a chance to learn and grow? It’s like God is saying He’s got our back.

I also think it is good to remember that storms don’t last forever. Just like the weather changes, so do our circumstances. When I’m in the middle of a tough time, it can feel like it’s never going to end, but I’m learning to trust that God has a plan for me. He’s using these experiences to shape me into who I’m meant to be. Honestly, that’s pretty exciting!

Psalm 107:29 reminds us that “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” Our heavenly father is ever-present, guiding and calming our fears just as He did for the disciples.

The Bible also demonstrates how we can build our faith and skills in the midst of storms. In Matthew 14, when Peter walks on water toward Jesus, he initially succeeds, but then begins to sink when fear grips him, when he took his eyes off of Jesus.  Jesus immediately reaches out and saves him, asking, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31, NIV). This story exemplifies that as we confront storms, our focus should remain on our Savior rather than the waves threatening to overwhelm us, keeping our eyes always on Him.

With God, we do not need to fear the storms; instead, we can approach them with the confidence that we are learning to navigate our ships. Each wave we encounter sharpens our ability, deepens our faith, and prepares us for the next adventure.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ESV)
